I recently moved from my childhood home to my first home. Check out some packing and moving tips that helped me.

Gather supplies: You’ll need boxes, packaging material for fragile items, and boxcutters, packing tape and garbage bags will come in handy.

Purge old things: While you’re packing, toss or donate things you don’t need or want anymore. Don’t bring old habits into your new home!

Moving large furniture: I ordered new furniture and scheduled deliveries so that they came after we got the keys to our house. You don’t want to get stuck with hauling a couch from your old place to your new home.

Pack by room and label: Keep items from the same room in the same box. Label your boxes (color-coding helps) and add a short description of its contents if you have multiple boxes for the same room.

Pack consciously: Especially if you’re using a moving service, put heavy items in small boxes and light items in bigger boxes to make it easy for all involved. Heavier boxes should be packed closer to the front of the car or truck for better balance. For extra heavy boxes, add extra tape to the bottom seams and edges.

Keep the essentials with you: Avoid being without your toothbrush, skincare, a change of clothes, medications, etc. by packing a small bag filled with your essentials.

Book services early: This applies to moving services, renting supplies or related services. Booking too close to the date you need the service will drive up the cost and potentially leave you waiting for a time slot or date to open up. Pro tip: Moving mid-week, mid-month will save you the most money.

Take care of your utilities ASAP: In order to avoid being without water, electricity, internet and other utilities, make sure you call the right companies to get that squared as soon as it is appropriate.

Address changes: Make sure you update the address field for all your important information, like bills, subscriptions and the like.
