Beaulieu Vineyards is one of the longest-operating wineries in California's Napa Valley. Its name comes from the exclamation "Quelle beau lieu!" that Fernande de Latour, wife of the founder Georges, made when she saw the land. “Beau lieu" means a beautiful place, and it's a name that led the winery to explosive growth from prohibition to today. Considered an early pioneer of the California wine industry, de Latour imported pest-resistant vines from his nursery in Paris and grafted them onto vines throughout Napa Valley. The winery operated through prohibition with a special warrant to provide alter-wines to the Catholic Church. Demand for alter-wine grew during prohibition, and in the end, the maker was producing over one million U.S. gallons of wine.
The vintner remains an industry pioneer. In 1980, the winemaker collaborated with UC Davis to identify Cabernet Sauvignon clones that worked well on the estate's property sections. Visitors can enjoy ranches throughout Rutherford and attend wine-tasting events. Wines created here are famous for “Rutherford dust,” considered elemental to the area's wines' unique character. For those who love everything concerning wine, the company offers a membership program that extends special events and privileges to members.
