Yankee Candle started somewhat by accident when in 1969, a 16-year-old Mike Kittredge couldn’t afford to buy his mom a Christmas present. He melted red crayons into a milk carton and used kitchen string to make her a candle. A neighbor saw the candle and asked Mike to sell it to her. Selling the candle gave him the money to buy enough wax to make two more candles, one for his mom and one to sell. Yankee Candle was officially born, and by 1973, there were 12 employees working out of an old paper mill in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
