About Patagonia

Patagonia is an outdoor-clothing brand that traces its roots back to 1974. Its founder, Yvon Chouinard, is an outdoor adventurer who has achieved many remarkable climbing, surfing and kayaking feats, including being the first person to scale the Muir Wall in California’s Yosemite Valley and descend the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River in Montana. During a trip to Scotland in 1970, he purchased a rugby jersey and wore it while climbing in the U.S. The ruggedness of the garment impressed other climbers, so Chouinard imported a bunch and immediately sold them all. He soon ventured into hats, gloves and shorts, and from there Patagonia was born. Although the company almost suffered an early bankruptcy, it quickly bounced back to generate around $100 million in revenue by 1990.

As an adventurer who spent much of his younger years broke and sleeping outdoors, Chouinard has little in common with the typical businessman. Profit isn’t first on his mind, and he has set up his company to reflect that. Instead, Patagonia is committed to fighting the current environmental crisis. The company is a co-founder of 1% for the Planet, an organization committed to supporting grassroots environmental groups. Before producing products, the company assesses their impact on the environment and selects bio-degradable and naturally-sourced materials whenever possible.
